You might want to stand up for this: Sitting will kill you.
You might say, "Joanne, that's old news. Where were you a few months ago when that was first reported?" My real answer is, "Sitting on my couch eating Thin Mints," but since I want you to think I'm athletic, I would tell you I was sitting on my couch eating celery sticks.
I may be a little late to the party on this one, but I'm sure that's the only thing I haven't been up on. Have you guys heard about this new dance craze called The Harlem Shake?
Anyway, Dr. James Levine, an obesity expert -- a term I learned does not mean someone who is really good at gaining weight -- told NBC News in January that sitting for long periods of time is deadly for our health. You might as well go smoke a pack of cigarettes a day. Better yet, go inhale some second-hand smoke, which is even worse for you. Dr. Levine added that even if you exercise at the gym once a day and sit for the same amount of time, you are still slowly killing yourself.
If you have a desk job, Dr. Levine says you should get up for 10 minutes every hour to walk around. But that doesn't change the fact that I'm sad, sad that my once-a-day power walks aren't deflecting my butt time in front of RuPaul's Drag Race. Really, I work out just so I can earn golden doubloon sitting around points, as I did in my first video.
In my latest video, I show you how to practice safe sitting.
