Abandoned Olympic Venues: An Eerie Look Into The Past (PHOTOS)

Haunting Past Olympic Venues
|

What happens to Olympic facilities after the games are over? Well, some are turned into tourist-attracting parks, training facilities, theaters, concert halls, malls, museums, gymnasiums, biodomes, housing, and even prisons -- repurposing that obviously could never compare to their original states of glory. However, what one would never expect is for some of these sites to go entirely unused, shamefully rotting away after billions of dollars had gone into their creation.

The infamous Nazi Olympic Village remains abandoned 77 years later, but what is even more startling is the fact that the venues from the 2004 Olympics in Athens and 2008 in Beijing are just as haunting.

Click through the slideshow below to experience the eerie results of years of neglect.

A view of the disused Olympic softball stadium in Athens. Greece has long been criticized over the paradox of spending excessive amounts of money for the construction the 2004 Athens Olympic Games venues and failing to utilize most of them after the completion of the Games. Now, at a time when the cash-stripped, indebted and crisis-hit country is trying to stay afloat, the need to develop such sites is stronger than ever.
