Nearly 9 million Americans turn to prescription sleeping pills to secure a good night's rest, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But most of those prescriptions are unnecessary, says Dr. Christopher Winter, M.D., the medical director of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center.
"I think this study shows the unbelievable amount of lack of faith that people have when it comes to their sleep and the panic they feel when they don't get what they need," he says in a segment on HuffPost Live. While the importance of sleep is nothing to be trivialized, a medical intervention isn't necessarily the key to high-quality shut-eye. "We need to focus on the right thing," he says.
