Lady Gaga paid tribute to Princess Diana and Amy Winehouse during her Born This Way Ball performances in London this weekend, reports MTV News.

The 26-year-old singer pulled a female fan from the audience, placed a tiara on her head and sat next to her at piano, before dedicating her new song "Princess Die" to late women.

Before launching into the emotional ballad, Gaga told the crowd that she anticipated that playing the song she wrote for Princess Diana in London would generate "controversy," reports RadarOnline.

"Since I was a very young girl, the people’s Princess was the most important person in me and my mother’s life," she told the crowd. "I swore if I ever had an audience like this in London, I would take a moment to appreciate her... This is for her, Amy Winehouse, Alexander McQueen, Whitney Houston and me."

Gaga first debuted the sober tune at a concert in Melbourne in June , telling the crowd, "This song is a little bit sad," -- which is a bit of understatement. The song begins with the lyrics:

"Leave the coffin open when I go/ Leave my pearls and lipstick on so everybody knows/ Pretty will be the photograph I leave/ Laying down on famous knives so everybody sees."

With lyrics like that it's no wonder she felt the need to clarify that, "It's in no way reflective of the rest of music on the album, but it's about some of the most deep and personal thoughts I've ever had."

According to MTV News, Gaga held nothing back at her London performances, changing costumes 15 times throughout the night. She also paid tribute to the late John Lennon, calling him the "greatest songwriter ever" before performing his song "Imagine."

Later she told her fans just how much the show meant to her:

"Twickenham, im not even sure what to say. I’ll never forget tonight. London you were the fairest of the ball. now THAT was f*cking fun," she tweeted on Saturday.

After her show on Sunday night, the singer joined Jay-Z and Rihanna at the Paralympics closing party, and stole the show in a huge, white wedding dress with a plunging neckline that showed off some major cleavage.
