Making History: 15-year-old Flies Plane Solo

Cheering crowds at the Compton Woodley Airport waited on Saturday, July 11 as 15-year-old Kimberly Anyadike prepared to land a single-engine Cessna after making it through thunderstorms as she returned from Newport News, Virginia, according to the LA Times. Anyadike, who is believed to be the youngest African American female pilot to fly solo across the country, learned how to fly a plane and helicopter at the age of twelve through an after-school program for disadvantaged students in Compton. The organization, Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum, owns the plane she flew supervised by pilot Levi Thornhill who served with the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. It was a "daunting" task, yet Anyadike "wanted to inspire others to believe in themselves."-SG
