After making a documentary film about his experiences with an online "catfish" -- someone who pretends to be something entirely different than who they truly are online -- Nev Schulman said he was inundated with stories of people who'd gone through the same thing. Thus, "Catfish: The TV Series" was born.
Each episode of the series will spotlight one couple who have met online, but not yet in person. Then, Schulman and his team will help facilitate that first meeting, capturing it for the cameras. The expectation was that some people would be exactly who they said they are, while others would be perhaps nothing like they said.
The first episode dealt with the latter in a strange and sad way. Sunny thought she was in a serious online relationship with a real male model, but that wasn't who turned up for their intial meeting. Instead, it was an 18-year-old girl named Chelsea.
She said that Sunny had started talking to her after she set up the fake Facebook account, and so she just went with it. She then said she knew the male model she'd been posing as, but he took to Twitter to deny that claim.
It's a bizarre phenomenon that's been around since the advent of the Internet. These people aren't always dangerous -- sometimes they're just lonely or socially awkward. And "Catfish: The TV Series" will be there to shine a spotlight on their deception every Monday at 11 p.m. ET on MTV.
