Lindsay Lohan will play the late Elizabeth Taylor in "Liz & Dick," Lifetime has confirmed after months of speculation and lobbying.

“I have always admired and had enormous respect for Elizabeth Taylor," Lohan said in a statement. "She was not only an incredible actress but an amazing woman as well. I am very honored to have been asked to play this role."

The controversy-prone 25-year-old actress will play Taylor in the biopic about her life with Richard Burton. The duo met on the set of "Cleopatra" and had their love affair documented for millions. Leaving both their spouses to marry each other, the couple divorced, remarried and divorced once more.

“We are thrilled Lindsay will portray beloved Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor,” Rob Sharenow, executive vice president of programming at Lifetime Networks. Sharenow, said in a statement. "She is one of the rare actresses who possesses the talent, beauty and intrigue to capture the spirit of such a provocative icon."

Lohan has been using TV as a vehicle for a career comeback. The "Mean Girls" star recently hosted "Saturday Night Live," but didn't quite charm the critics. Her next small screen appearance will be on Fox's "Glee" as herself, judging the glee club at their Nationals show choir competition.
