It was just a few short lines from Amy Winehouse's hit "Rehab," but when Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, uttered her words and the crowd chimed in, one couldn't help but feel a somber mood fall over the audience at the UCLA Tennis Center Wednesday night. Martin then transitioned to the beginning chords of the band's emotional hit "Fix You," to the crowd's roaring approval of the mini tribute to the late singer.
The British band isn't the first group to use their musical chops to honor Winehouse with her own tunes after her tragic and untimely death. Days after the singer was found dead in her North London home, her longtime friend and musical partner, Mark Ronson, performed their hit "Valerie" in memory of his friend. The cast of "Glee" followed the trend, releasing their version of the song, performed on Season 2 and on their summer tour, early to honor Winehouse.
This performance, Coldplay's first in the United States in a few years, served as a benefit for the Grammy Foundation's music education programs and their "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" performance. Lindsay Lohan and sister Ali came out for the show and were amongst a crowd of adoring fans, including fellow celeb, Kate Bosworth.
