'After Earth' Trailer: Welcome To Earth, Will Smith & Jaden Smith (VIDEO)

WATCH: Will Smith Gets Welcomed To Earth In 'After Earth'

In the 1996 film "Independence Day," Will Smith acted as welcoming committee for aliens hellbent on destroying Earth. In the 2013 film "After Earth," it's Smith who's the alien. Sort of.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, "After Earth" tells the story of Cypher Raige (Will Smith) (yes, that's his name), a legendary general who wants to spend some time with his son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). The problem? Their spaceship crash lands on the remains of Earth, putting both men in grave danger.

Based on the trailer, Shyamalan has crafted a post-apocalyptic Earth that looks a lot like Pandora, the planet James Cameron invented for "Avatar." The action is perfectly terrifying, though fans expecting the elder Smith to play a large role might be disappointed; as explained in the synopsis on Coming Soon, he's incapacitated fairly quickly after the crash, leaving Jaden the chance to star and save the day.

"After Earth" is due out in theaters on June 7, 2013. Watch the trailer above.
