Before a massive audience at Rock am Ring Festival in Nürburgring, Germany, the Chris Martin-led rock outfit Coldplay unveiled five new songs from their still untitled LP -- which will be their first since 2009's "Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends." And thanks to the magic of the camera and the internet, they have de facto released them onto the web.
Titled, “Hurts Like Heaven,” “Major Minus,” “Us Against the World,” and “Cartoon Hearts,” they're sad-sounding additions to the even sadder new single the band just released, "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall." So, if you want an idea of what they might sound like before even pressing play, you have some pretty strong hints in those song names.
That being said, some might surprise you in their upbeat pop tempos!
Also: if you hear traces of the song "Ritmo de la Noche" by Mystic in "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," note that the band insists that they paid for the right to use the song as an inspiration.
"Allen and Anderson [writers of 'Ritmo'] are credited as writers on Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," Coldplay's spokesperson said. "Chris was inspired to write the song after watching the film Biutiful by Alejandro González Iñárritu. In the film, there is a nightclub scene in which a track [Ritmo de la Noche] is playing in the background, based on 'I Go to Rio.'"
