Now a spokesperson for several causes, she mentioned that she was only able to come out as gay after gaining her U.S. citizenship (in 1981, this would have been grounds for denial) and expressed her wish that the U.S. would be welcoming to immigrants and extend equal rights to gay and lesbian citizens.
