Patrick Dempsey recently re-signed for two more seasons of "Grey's Anatomy" (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC), but that hasn't stopped him from thinking about the series finale.

In an interview with TVLine, Dempsey said he wants "Grey's" to go quietly into the night.

"Gosh. I hope it’s not something traumatic like another plane crash or somebody getting run over by a bus," Dempsey said. "I think [life will] sort of just go on. I think it would just go out very simply -- and leave it open for the movie."

Both Dempsey and co-star Ellen Pompeo signed new "Grey's" contracts after months of speculation. The show has been enjoying decent ratings in Season 9. The most recent episode had about 9.7 million viewers -- a bit low for "Grey's" -- and a strong showing in the 18-49 demographic with a 3.4 rating.

After last season's big plane crash, Dempsey's character has been struggling with nerve issues, preventing him from operating. This season will also see Neve Campbell guest star as one of Derek Shepherd's sisters.

Dempsey's "Grey's Anatomy" finale hopes align with how another very popular medical drama ended its historic run. "ER" ended its 15-year run with business as usual at County General, the episode closing out with the doctors getting down to work. Reminisce with us below.
